What Niels did not manage to do in New York, he did in Barcelona: beat Sam Schröder. In the final match of the Wheelchair Masters, Niels was too strong for his compatriot with 6-4, 6-2.
For Niels, the tournament win was a fitting culmination of a fantastic tennis year. You can call it that when you win both the singles tournaments of Roland Garros and Wimbledon in one year, make it to the final match of the US Open and finish the year as number one in the world.
Flat tire
In 2023, Niels played fourteen tournaments. He lost only two games, both times to Sam Schroeder. So in the city of Sagrada Familia there was sporting revenge. Niels still had some technical problems: a flat tire was an additional obstacle. After his pit crew fixed that problem, nothing stood in the way of victory.
Double win
A day before the singles final, Niels also had reason to cheer. Together with Sam he won the finals of the doubles. So the maximum score in Spain!
