Niels added a nice piece of gold to his collection. Not just any gold: paralympic honorary metal. He earned it by winning the doubles final, just like three years ago, together with Sam Schröder. But his mission is only half complete....
Niels and Sam crossed swords, or rackets, in the finals with Andy Lapthorne and Greg Slade. Two excellent and well matched players from Great Britain. They were not second placed for this tournament for nothing. The four top athletes treated the audience to brilliant stroke changes. A feast for the fans - and there are plenty of them.
Yet it never really got exciting. The first set went 6-1 to our compatriots. In the beginning of set deux things were more even, but eventually Niels and Sam took distance, never to be caught up again.
Thursday another final
After the last point Niels and Sam drove into each other's arms in a frenzy of joy, vocally supported by equally enthusiastic fans in orange. They are not going home yet, because Thursday there is another final on the menu. Niels will take on his doubles partner Sam Schröder. In the past they have often proved to be very evenly matched, so it promises to be an exciting afternoon in Paris. You can follow the final live on NOS.nl.
