After his double success at the Paralympics in Paris, Niels' year couldn't fail. Still, he provided 2024 with even more lustre on November 17, by winning the Wheelchair Tennis Masters in Arnhem.
In Arnhem - the last tennis event of the year - Niels lived up to the sky-high expectations. He defeated his four-year older compatriot Sam Schröder 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, underscoring his untouchable status in the second half of this tennis year. Since the start of the grass season, Niels won seventeen duels in a row, including titles at Wimbledon and the Paralympics. It was the fourth time in a row that Niels beat Sam. With that, 2024 ended in major for Niels.
On to Australia
What else is on the menu for Niels? His birthday, on Dec. 6. And preparations for the Australian Open, in January 2025. That is the only grand slam tournament Niels has never won. As a loyal visitor of this site, we are willing to reveal that he plans to change that, but please don't tell anyone.
The last word is to Niels. "No matter how old I get; 2024 is something I will never forget. I want to thank all my fans for all their support and involvement this year. Amazing how many people were at my races, physically or from a distance. I wish everyone beautiful holidays and a very healthy, happy new year. I'm going to do my best to treat everyone to highlights on the tennis court again in 2025!"
