On the weekend of July 17 and 18, many Brabanders headed for southern climes as the vacations began. I was in a slightly less warm place at the time, namely the hallowed turf of Wimbledon. There I won my first ever Wimbledon title, both in singles and doubles!
I won't beat around the bush: grass has never been my favorite surface. Playing tennis on grass is completely different from playing tennis on, say, gravel, but I trained hard. And practice makes perfect, as the saying goes.
That was evident at Wimbledon. While the audience was feasting on the locally much-loved strawberries with whipped cream, things were going very well on the tennis court! My battle plan worked out well and after several wins, there were suddenly two finals on July 17 and 18. First, my doubles buddy Sam Schroeder and I won the doubles final together on Saturday.
Finest hour
Sunday followed my finest hour. In two sets I defeated my Australian opponent Heath Davidson: 6-1 and 6-2. A great moment! I can try to explain what it's like to win Wimbledon, but you just have to experience it yourself. So to work!
Article in the ED
After returning, I was met by journalist Hans van de Ven of the Eindhovens Dagblad. He wrote this beautiful article about one of the most beautiful moments of my life so far! But I will try to add many more such moments, so don't lose sight of me!
